In fact, this is the second time he surpassed the 42km national marathon record in Tokyo in two consecutive years and the previous record was set by himself!
According to Bernama, the 29-year-old clocked two hours 25 minutes 32 seconds this time, more than two minutes faster than his previous record of two hours 28 minutes 19 seconds from last year.
The Tokyo Marathon is one of Asia's largest running events. It is a certified (International Association of Athletics Federations) IAAF Gold Label race with a fast course.
In fact, Tan qualified for the 2017 Kuala Lumpur SEA Games last year because of his achievement in Tokyo, finishing fourth at the regional tournament.
Currently living and working in Taiwan, his latest accomplishment will prepare him for SEA Games to be held in the Philippines next year.
