Cricket: New Zealand, Pakistan could face off in Malaysia
A scheduling clash in the UAE could lead to the two powerhouses playing their upcoming series of matches in Malaysia instead.
PETALING JAYA: Malaysia could play host to nine matches between two cricket giants in November due to a scheduling clash.
According to a report published in a New Zealand news portal, Stuff, the Kiwis and Pakistan had originally been slated to play a series of one-day international matches and Twenty20 matches in Sharjah, United Arab Emirates.
However, the Afghanistan Super League is to be held in Sharjah at the same time as when the two international sides had scheduled their matches.
Ever since a terror attack in Lahore in 2009, Pakistan have been playing their home matches in the UAE.
Pakistan Cricket Board chairman Najam Sethi said: “The Afghan League is tentatively scheduled by them at a time when our Australia and New Zealand series will be taking place in the UAE.
“They are denying the Sharjah facility to us because of the Afghan League. So that’s a problem for us.
“Therefore, I am going to Malaysia to explore the prospects of shifting our Australia and New Zealand series, if they insist on denying the Sharjah facility to us during the Afghan League.”
Sethi added that he would also speak to those in charge of the Afghanistan Super League to try to persuade them to change their match dates to prevent the scheduling conflict.
However, New Zealand Cricket seems to have been left in the dark over the possible switch of venue to Malaysia.
Speaking to the New Zealand Herald, New Zealand Cricket chief executive David White said: “We’ve had no communication from them on that, so you know as much as me.
“I don’t think there’s any point in speculating until they do come to us.”
Malaysia has been an associate member of the International Cricket Council since 1967.
It has hosted two major international tournaments — the 1998 Commonwealth Games cricket tournament, won by South Africa, and the 2008 Under-19 Cricket World Cup, won by India.
There is only one internationally-recognised cricket stadium in Malaysia, the Kinrara Academy Oval in Puchong, Selangor.
