SHAH ALAM: The Election Commission (EC) has yet to call for a public inquiry for almost 200 people who had raised objections following proposed redelineation exercises in Selangor.
According to Sri Andalas assemblyman Dr Xavier Jayakumar, Selangor Pakatan Harapan and Bersih 2.0 had submitted more than 250 objections to the EC.
Xavier said to date, only 40 objectors had been called for the inquiry conducted at Concorde Hotel here from Feb 26 to 28.
“These objections include those by voters from the Ampang, Pandan, Gombak, Kuala Selangor, Kuala Langat and Serdang parliamentary constituencies.
“The other 210 objections came from voters in other constituencies in Selangor.
“They are supported by more than 22,000 signatures. These voters deserve the right to know what has happened to their objections,” he said in a statement.
He pointed out that all the objections were submitted with valid arguments based on law and facts, as stipulated under Section 2, Schedule 13 of the Federal Constitution. As such, these objectors must be called for a public inquiry.
“If the EC has reasons to reject these 210 objections, the voters in question should be issued a notice in writing.
“We will not hesitate to take legal action against the EC for failing to call voters over these 210 objections for a public hearing,” he said.
Earlier this month, more than 30,000 signatures objecting to the proposed redelineation of electoral boundaries for parliamentary and state constituencies in Selangor were handed over to the EC.
One objection needs a minimum of 100 signatures.
In the second redelineation proposal, according to Pakatan Harapan MPs, parliamentary seats such as Gombak, Ampang, Pandan, Kuala Selangor and Tanjong Karang were the most affected.
