Nik Omar Nik Aziz’s decision to contest on a PKR ticket was also hailed by PKR president Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail as a big deal.
Both Nurul Izzah and Wan Azizah have welcomed Nik Omar’s move to contest a Kelantan seat on the PKR ticket in GE14.
BUKIT MERTAJAM: PKR vice-president Nurul Izzah Anwar has hailed the decision of Nik Omar Nik Abdul Aziz, the eldest son of the late PAS spiritual leader Nik Aziz Nik Mat, to contest the coming polls on a Pakatan Harapan (PH) ticket.
She said this was an important step in the pact’s push to win Putrajaya.
Nurul Izzah said Nik Omar’s switch from PAS to PH was a bold step and a move motivated by his conscience.
“It was not an easy step for him to take. He was attacked by PAS leaders but saving Malaysia is his commitment,” Nurul said at a press conference at Yayasan Aman here today.
Nik Omar will contest his late father’s old state seat of Cempaka. He wanted to join Amanah but has put that on hold due to his voters’ wishes. PAS has since sacked him from the party.
The late Nik Aziz was last elected in Cempaka with a majority of 6,500 votes in 2013.
Following his death in 2015, Ahmad Fathan Mahmood @ Mahamad retained the seat for PAS in a by-election by defeating four independents with a majority of 10,092 votes.
Fathan will defend the seat against Nik Omar and Mohamed Fareez Noor Amran of Barisan Nasional (BN).
PKR president Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail also hailed the Nik Omar factor as a big deal that would improve PH’s chances of victory in Kelantan tremendously.
“Nik Omar will be able to win over voters in Kelantan.”
