Teh-Yee-Cheu-bendera-pulau-pinang-flags-1GEORGE TOWN: Tanjung Bungah assemblyman Teh Yee Cheu, who is expected to quit DAP before the 14th general election (GE14), says he may run in another state constituency in Penang in the next general election.

“When I become free (after leaving DAP), I will be free to go anywhere,” he said, adding that he wanted to help in areas that needed “socialist back-up”,” he told reporters at a press conference by Parti Rakyat Malaysia (PRM) today, where the socialist party announced it would contest in 30 state seats and all 13 parliamentary seats in Penang.

Teh acknowledged that it would be a challenge for him to “start from zero”.

“It does not matter. I want to be very sincere to the public. I want to serve,” he added.

Teh, who first won in Tanjung Bungah as DAP candidate in 2008, said he did not want the party to accuse him of using its resources for himself and trying to grab the seat after quitting.

“I give it back to you. I don’t owe you, and you don’t owe me,” he said.

He said he wanted to run in a “tough” area and was willing to work his way up from scratch.

Teh said he would support PRM candidates but had not decided which party he would be joining.

Last October, Teh had announced that he would leave DAP at the end of the current term due to his differences with the DAP-led Penang government.

The state government subsequently stripped him of his constituency allocations amounting to nearly RM200,000, as well as other powers accorded to assemblymen from DAP and PKR such as the authority to sign off documents related to aid payments for constituents.

Last week, the state terminated five assistants from his constituency’s service centre.

Teh also hoped that PRM could make a comeback and be as influential as the Socialist Front alliance of the 1960s.

He said there was a need for more coalitions in the nation’s politics.

He said it was the right time for a “third force” due to the #Undirosak (spoilt votes) campaign seeking to deny votes for both Barisan Nasional (BN) and Pakatan Harapan (PH).

Teh said a credible new coalition would provide checks and balances, while giving option to voters dissatisfied with BN and PH.
