GEORGE TOWN: Gerakan’s Hng Chee Wey, initially slated to contest the Tanjung Bungah state seat, said the decision to field Penang Barisan Nasional (BN) chairman Teng Chang Yeow in the constituency was a strategic move to face the May 9 election.
The Tanjung Bungah BN coordinator said the change was driven by the escalating number of environmental issues in the area.
“There is no such thing as this seat belonging to me. It belongs to BN and it is important to let the party decide,” he said at the state Gerakan headquarters today.
Hng, the state BN Youth chief, dismissed rumours that he was nudged out of the seat by Teng due to the latter’s position as Gerakan chairman.
He also rubbished remarks that the party chairman had the power to take over any seat he wished to contest.
The change will now see Hng contesting in Batu Uban, where he will face off against PKR’s A Kumaresan.
In Tanjung Bungah, Teng will go up against DAP’s Zairil Khir Johari, the former Bukit Bendera MP.
During the candidacy announcement on Tuesday, Teng had said that he had chosen to contest Tanjung Bungah due to the perennial environmental issues there as well as the presence of a strong civil society movement there.
Tanjung Bungah is one of the state seats under the Bukit Bendera constituency. It was previously held by Teh Yee Cheu, who has since left DAP.
The largely urban seat was once a Gerakan stronghold, represented by former chief minister Dr Koh Tsu Koon.
