KUALA LUMPUR: The world’s highest-note vocalist Svetlana Feodulova graced the 16th Russian Diplomats Day here today.

In attendance were representatives from more than 20 embassies and foreign missions based in Malaysia as well as members of Wisma Putra. The event was held at the JW Marriott in Bukit Bintang.

Flying in specially for the commemoration, Svetlana charmed the audience with an impressive performance, going through several classical and contemporary pieces in the span of an hour.

Among the recognised works were “Waltz” by Johann Strauss, “Vocalise” by Sergei Rachmaninoff, and “Nessun dorma” from Giacomo Puccini’s opera “Turandot”.

Her rendition of P Ramlee’s “Getaran Jiwa” especially delighted Malaysian guests.

Svetlana’s title is endorsed by the Guinness Book of World Records and is also the highest-tone female voice in Russia. She currently teaches at the Moscow People’s Theatre.

She was accompanied by accomplished Malaysian pianist Kok Kee Boon and Ilya Yudichev, a gifted vocalist at the Moscow College of Art.

Yudichev equally wowed the crowd with his huge and impressive range of notes.

Ambassador of the Russian Federation to Malaysia Valery Yermolov said music helped bridge the divide between cultures and countries as a “universal language”.

“Diplomacy exists to us to know when to talk, when to keep quiet and when to listen. Where words fail, music speaks.”

He said that despite being a relatively new holiday, Diplomats Day was gaining recognition in international relations.

“The holiday was created by presidential decree on Feb 10, 2002, marking the 200th anniversary of the establishment of the foreign affairs ministry.

“The selection of this date was no accident as Tsar IV founded the Ambassadorial Order on Feb 10, 1549,” he said.

Yermolov said the holiday had already become an integral part of a diplomat’s life.

“Diplomats do not just attend receptions and enjoy entertainment.

“Diplomacy is an intense, highly intellectual service to our respective countries and for us is inseparably linked to the mysterious nature of the Russian soul,” he said

Yermolov also referenced the assassination of Russian ambassador to Turkey, Andrei Karlov, in 2016. He was killed in the line of duty.

“Unfortunately, such tragedies happen even today but we will continue to serve through the turbulent times.”
