National diver agrees to give up the gold medal she won with Wendy Ng Yan Yee, after her partner tested positive for drugs.
KUALA LUMPUR: National diver, Nur Dhabitah Sabri has agreed to give up the gold medal she won with Wendy Ng Yan Yee, if the SEA Games Federation (SEAGF) insists it should be withdrawn.
Nur Dhabitah won the gold medal with Wendy for the women’s synchronised 3m springboard event at the 29th SEA Games in Kuala Lumpur (KL2017). However, Wendy tested positive for drugs during the event.
Nur Dhabitah admitted that while there was some disappointment, the two shared a sense of esprit de corps and she would always support Wendy and be willing to accept any decision regarding the gold medal.
“I want Wendy to know, we, the national diving squad will always be together to boost Wendy’s spirit over the doping issue,” she said after winning the bronze medal in the women’s individual 3m springboard at the FINA Grand Prix (GP) Diving Championship Kuala Lumpur 2017 at the National Aquatic Centre today.
At KL2017, Nur Dhabitah also won the silver medal in the women’s individual 3m springboard and will probably win the gold medal in the event Wendy’s gold medal is withdrawn for the same event.
Wendy was confirmed to have taken the banned substance, Sibutramine, normally found in slimming products, after the B sample tested at the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) in New Delhi on Oct 11, was also positive.
The Amateur Swimming Union of Malaysia (ASUM) however intends to make an application with the Olympic Council of Malaysia (MOM) and SEAGF for the withdrawal of only the one individual medal won by Wendy.
