“We have always been moderate because anything other than that is a recipe for disaster,” he said in response to remarks made by Johan Saravanamuttu, a fellow at the S Rajaratnam School of International Studies in Singapore.
During a roundtable discussion on multiculturalism at Institut Darul Ehsan yesterday, Saravanamuttu warned of the danger of allowing a political party to govern for too long, saying it would try to maintain its rule by implementing one-sided policies.
Nazri dismissed Savaranamuttu’s view as just one man’s opinion. “The Barisan Nasional template and experience will not allow extremism to breed and flourish,” he said.
In his presentation, Savaranamuttu said Malaysia was “fraying at the seams as far as moderation and multiculturalism goes”.
Speaking of the coming general election, he said Pakatan Harapan, if it emerged victorious, must ensure that it remain in power for at least two terms.
“Pakatan Harapan must not only win, but it must stay in the government for at least another term for there to be an electoral balance in order to continue policies of moderation,” he said.
Nazri scoffed at the remark, saying Pakatan would not be able to “replicate or fake” what BN had done in terms of moderation because the opposition coalition would not last.
“BN has been tested since 1955, when it was the Alliance,” he said. “We are still together.”
