SUBANG: Maria Chin Abdullah has denied claims by some PKR members that there is “close to zero” allocation of funds to promote the party in certain state seats under the Petaling Jaya parliamentary seat which she will be contesting in the upcoming polls.
The candidate from Pakatan Harapan was referring to the Seri Setia state seat where long-time PKR supporters say their candidate, party vice-president Shaharuddin Badaruddin, has not been featured on any posters.
“Seri Setia is huge, from Subang Airport until here, and we only have 11 days to campaign,” Maria said, adding that small leaflets with Shaharuddin’s face have already been distributed.
This contradicted with what a long-time PH supporter here said on the issue.
“Allocations to promote the candidate in the area are close to zero. We are all relying on friends and family for donations to campaign.
“We are doing it (campaigning) with whatever resources we have. We are running the show here,” the party man said.
PKR won the Seri Setia seat in the last two general elections, with PKR Youth chief Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad representing the constituency for the past two terms. He has now moved up to the Setiawangsa parliamentary seat in the 14th general election (GE14).
His replacement, Shaharuddin, is the deputy vice-chancellor of Universiti Selangor (Unisel) and is virtually unknown in Seri Setia.
The PKR member said the party’s banners and flags have all been put up, but many residents here were still left wondering how their candidate looks like.
“However, people are more aware now. They know what is the common logo to be used by all the Pakatan Harapan party candidates and they’ll vote for that,” he said, referring to the PKR logo which has been agreed upon by all PH components in Peninsular Malaysia.
“I think it would be better for the candidate (Shaharuddin) to come here and introduce himself, especially to the residents here, who are 98% Indian,” the party source said.
Meanwhile, Maria did not seem to be worried about the current situation, saying that she believed Shaharuddin would be making his rounds in the area soon.
The former Bersih 2.0 chairperson had her own walkabout in the Seri Setia constituency today, with support from former Bar Council president, Ambiga Sreenevasan.
