Hackers from KL targeting us, says SAPP
The party's deputy president Melanie Chia says there have been attempts to get into the party’s Google account.
KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah Progressive Party (SAPP) is claiming that hackers are attacking the party’s Google account as campaigning for the coming polls hots up.
SAPP election director of operations Melanie Chia said the party’s Google account administrator noticed attempted illegal logins from 8.15am today.
“We began tracing the origins of these attacks and a bulk of them were from Kuala Lumpur,” she said.
Apart from the hacking attempts, there have also been multiple postings attacking SAPP on its Facebook page and these were traced to individuals in Kuala Lumpur, Perak, Johor and Penang, she said.
She said the party would be lodging a report with the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC).
“We checked back through the IP (Internet Protocol) address and the hacking attempts could have been carried out through a combination of devices, such as smartphones, tablets and laptops,” Chia said.
“I strongly believe this is an organised effort to hack into our Facebook page.”
She said if they managed to gain access, the hackers could then sign in to any of the party’s Google account-related services, such as Facebook and YouTube.
They could then post fake news and defamatory statements that would adversely affect SAPP and the Gabungan Sabah coalition it belonged to, Chia said.
“I don’t understand why we are being targeted. Are we such a threat to Malayan parties? Or is it because the issues we have been fighting for, including getting back what rightfully belongs to Sabah, are worrying them?” she asked.
She said the party was stepping up security measures for all its internet-related accounts, including email, Facebook and WhatsApp by frequently changing the passwords.
The hacking attempts came just a day after Chia, who is also the SAPP deputy president, said those contesting in the polls should not resort to underhanded tactics such as smear campaigns.
