Kedah Umno Youth calls Mahathir hypocrite over redelineation
Its chief Shaiful Hazizy Zainol Abidin says the former prime minister is responsible for the system that he now claims is dirty.
GEORGE TOWN: A Kedah Umno Youth leader today accused former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad of being a hypocrite in his criticism against the Election Commission’s (EC) electoral boundary changes.
Kedah Umno Youth chief Shaiful Hazizy Zainol Abidin said Mahathir, who is now Pakatan Harapan (PH) chairman, was being “two-faced” by joining electoral watchdog Bersih 2.0 in condemning the redelineation.
Shaiful said Mahathir was aware of the electoral system in Malaysia, which was the same system that had given him power for many years.
“What system and trickery did Tun (Mahathir) resort to in the redelineation exercises in 1986 and 1995?
“When Tun did it, was it clean, fair, and reasonable?” he asked in a statement.
He was responding to Mahathir’s criticism of the hasty approval of the electoral boundary changes in the Dewan Rakyat yesterday.
Mahathir, who is also PPBM chairman, said more time should have been given for debate on the redelineation proposals.
The Dewan Rakyat passed the motion on the redelineation of electoral boundaries after MPs from both sides debated for some two hours. Earlier, there were protests against the plan outside the Parliament building.
During the debate, seven MPs from each side were allocated 10 minutes each to put their points across.
Shaiful said Bersih should feel awkward and ashamed of using Mahathir as its main spokesperson.
He added that the former prime minister was the person responsible for the system which he now claimed was dirty.
Shaiful called on the opposition not to use the redelineation as an excuse to gain political sympathy.
“The opposition, who have always said they are strong, should not be afraid of such an exercise.
“Redelineation is a normal process in the country’s electoral system, so why is it such a big issue now?” he asked.
Shaiful added that not one voter would lost their right to vote in the redelineation exercise and that they still had the power to choose who they wanted.
“I urge the opposition to accept reality. Let us work towards getting the rakyat’s mandate. Don’t use the redelineation as political rhetoric.
“The redelineation exercise was done according to the rules and the law,” he added.
