Najib: Hypocrite opposition adulating ‘father of all tolls’
PETALING JAYA: Prime Minister Najib Razak has accused the opposition of being hypocritical over his administration’s efforts to reduce or eliminate existing tolls on public roads across the country.
He claimed that the hypocrisy was shown in their move to criticise and belittle the initiative while they themselves adulated and supported a former leader whom he described as the “father of all tolls”.
He said this person was behind lop-sided deals that had benefited some cronies, but had brought losses and affliction to the people.
“The government has had to bear the burden of toll subsidies that only benefit certain areas and community groups.
“Such allocations could be used in a better way for people’s welfare across the country,” he said in his blog today.
Najib said this when confirming that toll collections at four places had ceased from today.
These were at Batu Tiga and Sungai Rasau in Selangor, the Eastern Dispersal Link (EDL) in Johor, and Bukit Kayu Hitam in Kedah.
Najib said he remembered the reaction of the opposition in the Dewan Rakyat when he announced the move to cease collection of toll at these four places when tabling the 2018 Budget on Oct 27.
“The atmosphere became chaotic, more so as the opposition busily began to think about how they could twist the announcement for their own political interests,” he said.
Najib said besides these four, toll collection at several other places had been abolished since 2009 after he took charge.
He said toll rates at other places had been restricted although their concession agreements demanded that they be raised due to the “legacy” of two former leaders.
Although he did not name the leaders, he was obviously referring to PPBM chairman Dr Mahathir Mohamad, who was prime minister for 22 years till 2003, as one of them.
He said the government would continue to keep tabs on the “pulse of the people” by helping to provide infrastructure facilities like the toll-free Pan Borneo Highway and railway projects, as well as welfare assistance and incentives.
“I believe the people can see and feel for themselves the sincere efforts of the Barisan Nasional (BN) government today in making promises, not for votes, but for the benefit of the Malaysian people,” he said.
