BN’s Teng dismisses ‘comedian’ Guan Eng over tunnel issue
Responding to 'sabotage' claim by Penang CM Lim Guan Eng, state BN chairman Teng Chang Yeow says state government did it to themselves.
GEORGE TOWN: Barisan Nasional (BN) has dismissed Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng’s accusation that it wants to “sabotage” the Penang undersea tunnel and three roads’ project calling on the latter to “stop being a comedian and speak based on facts”.
Penang BN chairman Teng Chang Yeow said the reality, however, is that Lim’s government had sabotaged the project, owing to its lack of competency.
Yesterday, Lim blamed BN leaders for taking the wind out of the sails of the RM6.3 billion project. He accused BN of interference and sabotage and wondered if the project would take place, at all.
Teng said Lim’s excuse did not make any sense, as the BN did not try to stop the project from going through.
He said BN did not go to court to stop the project or move a motion at the state legislative assembly to delay it.
“We had only ‘revisited’ the issues related to the project about two weeks ago,” said Teng, who is also state Gerakan chairman.
He said the Penang government themselves had said the project would take off in mid-2018, pending environment study outcomes and regulatory approvals.
“So, who is delaying the project? You think we are doing this on purpose?
“You are the chief minister, so stop being a comedian and speak based on facts,” Teng told reporters at the press conference at the Gerakan headquarters here today.
He said a “proper sabotage” would be in the form of moving a motion similar to that which was done by DAP in 2002 against the Penang Outer Ring Road (PORR) project, causing the highway project to be shelved.
The BN-mooted PORR was supposed to cut across the island at a cost of RM1.02 billion in 2002.
Teng reminded DAP that it had led the opposition bench which moved the motion at the Penang state assembly, thus “sabotaging the project”.
“We are asking questions about the undersea tunnel and roads project in the media only. So stop finding excuses and accusing us of sabotage,” Teng said.
He said it was also surprising that the timeline of the undersea tunnel and roads project has been pushed twice.
He said in 2015, the Penang government said the three roads project would begin in 2016 and be completed in 2020. But in May 2017, the state says it would begin the roads project in mid-2018.
“This sabotage is of their (Penang government’s) own doing. Whether it will take off or not, only they can tell.”
Earlier today, Lim clarified that his “sabotage and delay” remark was confined to the three main roads alone, not the undersea tunnel component. Lim said the tunnel’s study was still ongoing and if given the pass, it would begin in 2023.
The entire project came under renewed scrutiny following a fresh probe by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), with investigators zooming in on payments for studies on the project.
Recently, an engineering firm boss with a Datuk Seri title was detained by the MACC, following the arrest of three others.
Two bigwigs from the construction companies were detained, too, but were later released on bail.
Since then, the Penang government and BN have revived the issue, which was a hotly debated topic in Penang in 2013 and 2014.
