On Monday, the action camera producer announced in a quarterly earnings report that it will be exiting the drone business entirely.
If you throw a stone into a crowd of people, the chances of it hitting someone who knows how to operate a drone are quite high.
People from every corner are trying to get their hands on a drone be it for business or leisure for the sheer value of aerial visuals it can capture. And companies like DJI and GoPro ventured into this market when they saw the huge demand.
However, although GoPro’s Karma drone was the second most popular drone in its price band last year, the company revealed that it faced profit margin problems due to the “extremely competitive aerial market”.
The company also cited hostile response in Europe and the United States, leading towards a shrinking market that they foresee in the coming years.
So before the aerial market gets weaker, GoPro has decided to quit producing drones and make an exit as soon as they sell what is left of the Karma.
But if you currently own a Karma drone, GoPro will still continue to provide services and support. So don’t panic just yet!
Quitting the drone market is just one of the few tough decisions the company had to make to save itself from its financial struggles since going public in 2014.
The company will also be cutting down its global workforce from 1,254 employers to less than 1,000 worldwide.
Apart from that, GoPro also announced a price cut for its flagship Hero 6 Black camera from USD499 (RM1,997) to USD399 (RM1,597). That’s good news for us!
Although we're sad to see the Karma drone go, we really hope things will turn around for GoPro this year.
