Malay interests will be protected by PH, assures Khalid Samad
PH's candidate for Shah Alam says Malays should not believe the narrative that only Umno can protect Malays and that rejecting PAS is rejecting Islam.
SHAH ALAM: Pakatan Harapan’s (PH) candidate for Shah Alam, Khalid Samad, has urged Malays to reject the rhetoric from Umno that it is the only party that can protect the Malays.
They should also reject PAS’ rhetoric that rejecting it means rejecting Islam, he added.
Speaking at a gathering with Shah Alam voters at Seksyen 17 here, Khalid said the Malays were allowing themselves to be influenced by such narratives from parties which did not take care of their interests.
“We must choose a government based on its track record and its manifesto,” he said, adding: “Choosing based on the manifesto is not enough, because any party can make false promises.
“Here in Selangor, for 10 years, we have proven ourselves.”
Khalid said Umno seemed to give the impression to Malays that it was the only Malay party and, therefore, the only party that could protect the Malays.
“It’s as if it is the only Malay party and if it falls, then Malays will fall too.
“But in PH, there are four parties. Three of these four parties are Malay-majority parties,” he said. “PPBM is 100% Malay, Amanah is 90% Malay and PKR is 60% Malay.”
On PAS, he said the party was attempting to give the impression to Muslims that if they rejected the party they would be rejecting Islam.
“And this has got some of the Malays second-guessing … as if the rest of us are not Muslims. This is a false interpretation of Islam.
“Islam and Malays will be protected even without PAS and Umno because both the special position of Islam and the Malays are enshrined in the Federal Constitution,” he explained.
